Ben Platt stars in the title role of this adaptation of the coming-of-age Broadway musical. 17-year-old high school student Evan Hansen suffers from crippling social anxiety. To help him overcome his fears and boost his confidence, his therapist advises Evan to write a series of letters to himself. After one of his classmates commits suicide, a misunderstanding places Evan and his letters in the spotlight. However, as he uses his new-found popularity to help others tackle their mental health issues, Evan's false claims start to come under scrutiny.
