Angesteckt von Goethes Calderón-Begeisterung setzte sich Keil, der um 1810 Lehrer und Bibliothekar in Weimar war, das Ziel, erstmals die über 100 ,comedias' des spanischen Barockdramatikers philologisch korrekt herauszugeben. Mit dem Titel eines Weimarer Hofrats (1814) und der Jenaer Ehrendoktorwürde (1828) blieb er auch als Bürger Leipzigs, der sich in verschiedenen Bereichen des kulturellen Lebens engagierte, Weimar und Jena fest verbunden, was seine Korrespondenz mit Johanna Schopenhauer, mit Bertuch und Froriep, mit Ottilie von Goethe und Erbprinz Carl Alexander bezeugt. Diese und weitere unbekannte Briefwechsel werden vollständig abgedruckt und durch die bereits bekannten mit Goethe und Arthur Schopenhauer sowie durch die im Nachlass überlieferten Lebenserinnerungen Keils ergänzt. Neben den hispanistischen Aktivitäten wird - in einem von Markus Bertsch verfassten Kapitel - seinen kunsthistorischen Interessen besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt.
