Tree Man is the debut novel from Sherif Mohamed Mattar, a surrealist dark comedy and psychological horror story that defies easy categorization while earning every emotional beat it lands. The narrator, a Nintendo-obsessed, Reese's-addicted everyman with a gift for philosophical rambling, first encounters the Tree Man as a schoolboy defending his childhood crush. But the Tree Man does not stay in childhood. He returns ten years later, then ten years after that, each visit more dangerous and more disorienting than the last. As the line between dream and waking life dissolves, the novel quietly transforms from absurdist comedy into something far more haunting: a meditation on grief, legacy, memory, and the comfortable delusions we build to survive. Mattar's narrator debates Pokémon starters, ranks Jay-Z albums, and mourns the death of the platforming genre with such specificity and warmth that readers trust him completely. That trust is precisely the trap. Funny, terrifying, and emotionally powerful.
