The Problem with Positivity
There is a quiet pressure humming beneath much of modern life, a
cultural demand that insists we smile even when our hearts are
breaking. It appears on coffee mugs and Instagram posts, in
corporate slogans and therapy sessions gone awry: "Choose
happiness." "Good vibes only." "Everything happens for a
reason." These phrases are presented as wisdom, but behind their
pastel fonts and upbeat cadence lies something far more
complicated.
The problem is not positivity itself. Hope, resilience, and the
ability to see possibility in hardship are essential human strengths.
But in recent decades, positivity has been stripped of nuance and
marketed as a panacea. It has been turned into an ideology-one
that insists our attitude alone determines the shape of our lives, and
that failure to thrive must always mean a failure to "think
positive." This ideology is what I call toxic optimism.
