In 1980, a routine charter carried boat captain Marshall Solomon straight into the heart of the Mariel Boatlift, one of the most chaotic mass migrations in modern Cuban history.
Hired to take eight Cuban Americans to Mariel Bay and bring twenty-eight relatives to freedom in the United States, Solomon expected a short, profitable trip. Instead, he and his passengers became trapped for nearly a month amid armed patrols, overcrowded boats, political tension, violence, shortages, and thousands of people desperate to escape Cuba.
What begins as an adventure for money becomes a firsthand confrontation with fear, loyalty, oppression, freedom, and the assumptions Solomon carried with him into Cuba.
