Being a part of a military family has its challenges which Nola accepted the moment her mom had to move their family to Naples, Italy two years ago. She has learned that living overseas isn't always so terrible. However, her first day of high school has arrived, a terrifying milestone because now she has the chance to interact with the equally scary upperclassmen.

Nola and her best friend Bria are determined to find boyfriends as they navigate this new school year as brand new freshmen, but they also have to consider that this could be their last year in Italy due to the fact that many military families don't have the privilege of graduating from the high school they start at. Many times, three years is the allotted time military brats have with each other before its time to pack up and make new friends again.

Tiny Gold Heart shows us a glimpse into the lifestyle of teenagers living on a military base and dealing with the knowledge of never knowing when your life will be uprooted. Appreciate the time you have with your friends because time and distance can put a strain on the best of friendships.
