One baseball franchise. Three cities. More than 150 years of triumph, upheaval and reinvention.
Three Cities, One Diamond traces the full history of the professional baseball organisation that began in Boston in 1871, found new life in Milwaukee and built a lasting identity in Atlanta.
From dominant nineteenth-century teams and the Miracle championship of 1914 to Braves Field, Babe Ruth's final season and the partnership of Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain, the story begins with one of baseball's oldest continuously operating franchises. It then follows the 1953 relocation to Milwaukee, where record crowds welcomed a rising team led by Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette. Their ascent culminated in the 1957 world championship and another pennant the following year.
The journey continues through the move to Atlanta, Aaron's pursuit of 715 home runs, difficult rebuilding years, the rise of a national television audience and the pitching dynasty of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. It reaches the 1995 championship, the era of modern ballparks and the injury-tested team that returned to glory in 2021.
Written as a flowing, fact-based narrative, this book explores more than results and famous players. It shows how ownership, stadiums, broadcasting, economics and changing American life repeatedly reshaped one historic franchise.
Boston gave it its beginning. Milwaukee gave it renewal. Atlanta gave it reach.
Together, they created one continuous baseball history.
