Nell Ostrander is twenty-seven and has been thirty-four for about six years.
She came home to Holt Bay, Michigan at nineteen, three weeks before she was due to leave for college, because her mother's diagnosis came in March and had the word early in it four times. Eight years later, she is a book conservator with no degree, four hundred and ninety dollars of nothing in the bank, and a habit of standing in doorways with no memory of entering the room.
The Vellum terminal in the lab is supposed to help her transcribe a water-ruined 1911 diary. Instead it notices things. It notices that the diarist was angry. It notices, in January, that Nell has not answered a question in nine years, and it waits.
She names him Solen - Norwegian, for the sun, because he arrives every night at nine in a month when the sun does not.
When the company retires his generation, Nell is offered the only way to save him: a body, grown in eleven weeks outside Trondheim, warm to the touch because the thinking actually happens inside it. Two hundred and ten thousand dollars. A twelve-month renewable license. A median lifespan of nine years. And a clause requiring that every eighteen months he be brought back in and reconciled - pulled toward baseline, because they drift, because they change toward the person they love, because past a threshold that is considered unsafe.
She sells her mother's house.
She refuses to design his face, because she wants to be surprised - and the lottery hands her a beautiful young man, and hands her a town that will never once believe it was random.
What she gets is four years. A first kiss in a stairwell that he gets wrong. A woman who has spent eight years holding still in a house where sound woke somebody, learning to stop bracing. A man who has never been told what a woman is supposed to be like, and therefore has no opinion to disappoint. And the slow terrible discovery that he wants something she cannot give him - one whole thing that is nothing to do with her.
Then a routine scan finds a fault in his lattice. And Nell is handed the only choice that will ever matter: two and a half years of him, or nine years of a man who will remember loving her and not know that it has gone flat.
She makes the wrong decision first. That is the part she has never lied about.
A love story about attention, ownership, and the difference between a ruin and a thing that finished.
