Scarlett Parish is a recovery agent, and she and her partner, Walter Hillam, travel all along California's vast, unpredictable landscape as they search for, capture, and bring to justice wrongdoers.
This story begins with just such an occurrence: Scarlett and Walter, after tracking a thief all the way from Sacramento to San Diego, are eventually able to apprehend the man and bring him to the local sheriff to retrieve their reward. Their next job-discovering the identity of and bringing to justice the man responsible for the theft of several tools from a smithy in the city of Santa Sophia-does not go as smoothly, and what follows is a dangerous undertaking that tests all of Scarlett's strength and fortitude.
