"Deer camps were a fixture of Northwoods life back when virtually everyone headed north for the nine-day deer season, most camps have now folded, their members deceased or dispersed, but a handful hang on. One such camp, The Silver Dollar Club, has been around for more than a hundred years, Member Dale Pitsch cronicles that history with words and photos in a self-published book, The Silver Dollar Deer Hunting Club, founded in the Ladysmith area by Pitsch's great grandfather Fred Pitsch. The Silver Dollar camp began as a WWI army surplus tent. Over the years, members gradually moved their camp north to Clam Lake, and eventually near Cornucopia on the south shore of Lake Superior. The tent gave way to a cabin in 1957, which has been moved once, and has served as the club's base camp for more than 60 years. Pitsch recounts the last 50 years of hunts in great detail, including stories of legendary bucks, whiteout blizzards and the year that the gang went 15 for 15 on bucks on opening weekend.
