The Ralls County Line

Jude MacAllen Tatman's voice comes from where he rightly insists is pronounced "Missoura." But it's not the spit-and-whittle palaver some might expect. It's authentic, grounded, its sound and rhythms coming from his native soil and big heart. One could say he "takes in" his landscapes and waterscapes-if that means he absorbs them, pulling you with him. His long sentences involve an often Miltonic cadence and a Whitmanesque cataloging of details ancient and present. "The Perfect Pour," his poem about the proper way to drink a pint of Irish stout, can be taken as a metaphor of how to take in life itself: it's to be done in detail, deliberately, with passion, and reverence.
