The Primordial Phallus

According to contemporary embryology, during the early stages of human fetal development, the external genital structure-often referred to as the primordial phallus-is morphologically phallic in form, but not yet sexually differentiated. That is, while it may appear superficially to resemble a penis, it is, at this stage, neither truly male nor truly female. It is a liminal organ, a structure poised between possibilities. It is not yet a "male organ" in the functional or reproductive sense, nor is it properly a "female organ." Instead, it is an undifferentiated form that contains within it the potential to become either.

This biological ambiguity at the beginning of life resonates deeply with the theological claim that humanity's original state-ha-adam before division-was one of unified potential rather than differentiated roles. In both biology and theology, gender is not something with which the human form begins, but something into which it is shaped.
