The Poetry of Our Lord

"The Poetry of Our Lord" is a profound scholarly investigation into the formal characteristics of the teachings of Jesus Christ as preserved in the Gospels. Written by the distinguished theologian Rev. C.F. Burney, this work explores the hypothesis that the original Aramaic discourses of Jesus were structured with the rhythmic and poetic qualities characteristic of Semitic literature. By examining the presence of parallelism, rhyme, and meter, Burney provides readers with a deeper understanding of the linguistic beauty and rhetorical power inherent in the New Testament.

This volume serves as an essential resource for students of Biblical criticism and those interested in the literary structure of the Bible. It meticulously analyzes various passages from the Synoptic Gospels and the Fourth Gospel to demonstrate how a poetic framework often clarifies difficult interpretations and highlights the central themes of the ministry of Jesus. Burney's expertise in Semitic languages offers a unique perspective on the oral tradition and the transition of these teachings from their original cultural context into the Greek texts of the New Testament. "The Poetry of Our Lord" remains a significant contribution to Biblical scholarship, inviting readers to appreciate the divine message through the lens of classical poetic artistry.
