The Orishas Never Came is a short theological reading of idols, exile and the Middle Passage. It begins in the wilderness, with a bronze serpent on a pole, and follows one question across thousands of years: what does it mean when a people's protectors do not protect them?
The book follows the Yoruba gods, the orishas, from Ile-Ife and the Oyo kingdom across the water into Santería in Cuba and Candomblé in Brazil. It sets that story beside the broken covenant of Deuteronomy 28 and the biblical logic of idolatry, and it asks what Deuteronomy asks of every scattered people: who did we serve, and who is the God of our fathers?
Along the way you will meet:
This is a theological argument, not a historical verdict. It does not say that any people deserved what was done to them. The transatlantic slave trade was carried out by human traffickers for human profit, and this book says so plainly. It asks a narrower, older question, and it asks it in good faith.
It is not a rebuke. It is an invitation to go back beyond the orishas to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Written for the children of the diaspora, for readers of Scripture, and for anyone who has wondered what the names they were given, or the gods their grandparents spoke of, really carry.
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee.
