Quantum mechanics predicts measurement outcomes with extraordinary precision. More than a century later, physicists still disagree about what its mathematics describes.

Many popular accounts present the wavefunction as though it were a picture of something physical-a field, a fluid, or a guiding wave. The Obstruction argues that this habit lies behind much of the interpretive disagreement. Drawing on the Kochen-Specker theorem, Spekkens's generalized noncontextuality, the sheaf-theoretic formulation of contextuality, the quantum reconstruction program, and the negativity of the Wigner function, the book develops a disciplined argument that the wavefunction is better understood as a coordinate system for a structural constraint: the impossibility of assembling locally classical probability assignments into one globally consistent classical description.

Every substantial technical claim is traced to a named result in the published literature. Speculative steps are identified as speculation. A full appendix presents the strongest objections to the book's own argument, allowing readers to evaluate both the proposal and its limitations on equal terms.

The Obstruction is a work of scientific interpretation and philosophical argument. It does not claim to present a new physical theory. Instead, it examines what established results in quantum foundations may imply about the conceptual structure of quantum mechanics. It is written for readers who already know the language of wavefunctions, superposition, and quantum measurement, and who value conceptual clarity.

Who this book is for
This book assumes familiarity with the basic language of quantum mechanics-terms such as wavefunction, superposition, and measurement problem-but does not assume specialist training in quantum foundations or mathematical physics. It is written for scientifically literate readers interested in the interpretive questions surrounding quantum theory and its conceptual foundations.
