In the MX, every decision you make is one you'll regret.

Exile in a lawless wasteland has taught Vara some lessons. Maybe the most important is to assume everyone she meets has bad intentions. That's why when word spreads of someone called the Yagowan promising gifts to all who journey to his island, Vara wants no part of it. Her knotmate Shine is less cautious, leaving Vara with a choice: follow the only people she trusts into potential danger or abandon them without even saying goodbye.

For Vara, the choice isn't hard. She's no hero and doesn't want to be. She just wants to be alive and free, and if that means going it alone, she's ready for that now.

Except she isn't, as she learns on her very first encounter with a stranger. When that stranger offers to get her to the Yagowan's island to reunite with her knot, Vara knows better than to trust him. But for their sake and her own, she can't refuse. Besides, this stranger has knowledge of the wider world, and in a place like the MX where hope doesn't stand a chance, knowledge can keep you alive.

Volume two of The MX picks up where the first left off, continuing Vara's coast-to-coast crossing of post-extinction America. This stage of her journey gives Vara her first glimpse of the forces that will shape her future. The 4-book series will tell Vara's story to complete resolution. By then, she might even be something close to a hero.
