The mayfly spends most of its existence underwater, emerging above the surface for only a short time at the end of its life to find a mate. This brief moment is what they live for. Deborah Vinton, brilliant young scientist, sheltered, unschooled in the ways of the world, spends a summer in her graduate program studying these creatures in a program run by entomologist Doctor Edwin Wilson up at Mount Myiagros. She learns much more than just her program's focus here.
