Only because his father is the chieftain of the Tukaitawa warriors, Zazu believes he has the right to lead the other children and decide everything for them. But his harsh, overbearing manner meets with resistance from his companions-and even from his own shadow, Tererai.
Everyone urges him to change, yet Zazu refuses to heed a single word. On the contrary, his wilfulness and pride grow so great that he is willing to cast away even his own shadow, simply to have everything done his way.
The boy has no inkling of the evil he unleashes the moment he surrenders his shadow to Thandir the Collector, lord of Erebos. Without a shadow of his own, he is seen by all as a soulless being-the source of the terrible calamity that has befallen the village.
Only one path remains: with the help of the sorceress Zilla, he must journey to the very end of the world, enter the Realm of Shadows, and bring Tererai back.
Easier said than done. Yet Zazu sets out all the same, embarking on a perilous adventure-a journey from which there may be no return.
