The Lay of Havelok the Dane

"The Lay of Havelok the Dane" is one of the most significant and enduring examples of Middle English romance. This narrative poem tells the legendary story of Havelok, the dispossessed heir to the Danish throne, and Goldborough, the rightful princess of England. After being cast out and forced into a life of humble labor as a fisherman's helper in Grimsby, Havelok's noble lineage is eventually revealed through supernatural signs. The poem masterfully blends elements of folklore, Viking history, and chivalric tradition, focusing on themes of justice, the restoration of rightful rule, and the struggles of the common people.

Presented with the scholarly insight of Rev. Walter W. Skeat, this version of "The Lay of Havelok the Dane" preserves the linguistic character and rhythmic vitality of the original verse. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the cultural and literary landscape of 13th-century England, where Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian influences converged. Readers and scholars alike will find value in this tale of resilience and triumph, which remains a cornerstone of early English literature and a vital piece of the medieval storytelling canon.
