This book is for educational and planning purposes. Retirement, tax, Social Security, Medicare, pension and investment rules can change and may vary by plan and individual circumstances. Verify current rules and obtain individualized professional advice when appropriate.
I retired from law enforcement at 49 after nearly 27 years. I spent years preparing for the financial side of retirement: watching my pension projections, saving, thinking about debt, and building flexibility into our finances. What I discovered after leaving was that financial readiness and personal readiness are two different things. The last shift is not the end of watch; it is the point where a first responder's career ends and the next part of life begins. This book grew out of that experience. It is not a promise that every first responder should retire at 50, and it is not a substitute for the rules of your pension, tax system, Social Security, Medicare, or financial plan. It is a roadmap for asking the right questions early enough to make informed decisions. The financial chapters are about building a retirement that does not depend on a second career. The later chapters are about what happens after the career ends: identity, purpose, relationships, time, and the ordinary Tuesday morning that nobody puts on a retirement calculator. I retired at 49. I planned toward 50 as the early-retirement finish line I had deliberately established for myself, but the real subject of this book is the transition that happens when the career ends. The exact age is less important than the process: know your numbers, know your options, and prepare for the life on the other side of the badge
