Lucien Derval has agreed to answer questions about the investigation that ended Adrian Morel's journalism career. Before their interview, he is found dead at a waterfront exhibition.

Inspector Maya Rivière examines the visitors and the accounts of Derval's final evening. Morel follows an old warning through the newspaper offices where he once worked, discovering how much rests on what people say they received.
On Belle-Rivière's harbour road, a present-day murder exposes the distance between a message being sent and its warning being heard.
