The Knowing

The egrets know first.

They lift from the south pasture in one pale, unhurried wave - not startled, just informed - and Aura watches them go from her place on the porch steps, a ceramic mug warm between both hands.

She already knows who is coming.

She always does.

They find her the way people find things they didn't know they were looking for - down a gravel road that most GPS systems either get wrong or give up on entirely, seven miles outside of Baton Rouge, on forty-three acres that have been quietly tending her as long as she has been tending them. They come with dogs that stopped living after someone died. With children who feel the hum of underground water in their bones. With grief so carefully managed it has migrated into every living thing around them. With blank pages where their life's work used to be.

She doesn't fix them.

She witnesses them. Which turns out to be the thing they needed. Which turns out, for most of them, to be the only thing that was ever going to work.

Aura has been here longer than the oldest families can account for. She has a wall in her kitchen covered in the language she built for things that had no other language. She has a way of knowing that isn't mystical - it's just precise. The body doesn't lie about what it's holding. She learned to read the signal.
