Alaska, 1940. Vivian Marsh restores broken furniture; she reads made things the way other people read faces, and she has loved Josephine Ryder for six years without once managing to say so. When the two women take Winterhail - a great grey house nine days' hire, remote past the last town with a lamp - Vivian carries her grandmother's ring stitched into her coat and a proposal she means, at last, to make on Christmas morning.
