The Hittite

Before he was betrayed by a king, he was a man with a name.

Uriah has spent his life answering the word men use before they know him: Hittite. Soldier, outsider, covenant-keeper, and servant of Israel's God, he learns early that a man cannot govern other men's tongues. He can only answer with the weight of his life.

Raised under restraint, formed by war, and tested among David's men, Uriah becomes known not for boasting, but for faithfulness. He holds his place when fear searches others. He fears Yahweh not as ornament, but as law over the strong. And when he receives Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam, as wife, he does not think first of possession, but of trust.

Their marriage grows in ordinary peace: bread, water, stores, departures, returns, laughter, sorrow, and the quiet hope for a child not yet given.

Then spring comes, when kings go out to war.

David remains in Jerusalem.

Uriah is summoned home from Rabbah, carrying loyalty into a palace shadowed by secrecy. Offered comfort, wine, and his own house, he refuses to take ease while the ark, Israel, Judah, Joab, and the servants of his lord remain exposed in the field.

And at last, the trustworthy man is given a sealed letter.

Uriah is a reverent biblical novel about faithfulness, restraint, marriage, power, and the God who judges kings.
