The History of a Crime

A Republic Betrayed. A Nation Silenced. A Crime Written into History.

On December 2, 1851, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte seized power in France, crushing the Republic he had sworn to defend. In a single night, political opponents were arrested, the National Assembly was dissolved, and Paris was plunged into violence and fear.

Victor Hugo witnessed these events firsthand. A passionate defender of democracy and a fierce opponent of tyranny, he transformed his outrage into The History of a Crime-a devastating account of the coup d'état that paved the way for the Second French Empire.

Combining eyewitness testimony, political analysis, and the extraordinary literary force of one of France's greatest writers, Hugo exposes the machinery of dictatorship: the lies, betrayals, repression, and calculated brutality through which a government turns against its own people.

More than a historical chronicle, The History of a Crime is a powerful indictment of authoritarianism and a timeless warning about the fragility of freedom.

When those entrusted with defending a nation become its greatest threat, history itself must bear witness.
