After leaving the Salt Lake Valley, Uzziah O'Bannon and Immanuel Jones aim for the quiet of their Rocky Mountain cabins. A stop at a trading post changes everything when a U.S. deputy marshal arrests Uzziah for the long-range shooting death of Dr. Erastus Timothy Wells. Though Uzziah insists the shot came from a Winchester-not his Hawken-he's jailed anyway. Immanuel breaks him out, and the two flee into the high country with a posse and a Shoshone tracker in pursuit. Even an avalanche on Mt. Elbert fails to stop the chase.

In Oro, a midnight robbery and a rigged trial deepen the trouble. The mountain men prevent Deputy Marshal Vergil Higgins from hanging, but he refuses to let them go. From Denver City to the settlement, Higgins presses the chase until his obsession leads to the kidnapping of Standing Bear's adopted son, drawing the Crow into a violent clash with the Blackfeet.

When the fighting ends, winter closes in. Uzziah rides back to the cabins alone, while Immanuel remains at the settlement, facing choices that could change both their lives.
