The Generalship of Ulysses S. Grant

"The Generalship of Ulysses S. Grant" is a seminal military analysis by the renowned British tactician and historian Colonel J. F. C. Fuller. In this comprehensive study, Fuller evaluates the strategic genius and operational methods of the Union's primary commander during the American Civil War. Breaking away from contemporary critiques that often characterized Grant as a leader who relied solely on numerical superiority, Fuller presents a nuanced portrayal of a commander who mastered the complexities of modern warfare and logistical coordination.

The work explores Grant's major campaigns, including Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and the Overland Campaign, examining how his clarity of purpose and innovative approach to grand strategy led to the eventual victory of the Union forces. Fuller's perspective as a military professional provides unique insights into the evolution of command and the principles of war as applied on the nineteenth-century American battlefield. By examining Grant's ability to adapt to changing circumstances and his relentless focus on the destruction of the enemy's military power, Fuller argues for Grant's place among the greatest military leaders in history. This volume remains an essential resource for students of military history, leadership, and the enduring legacy of the American Civil War.
