What is carried truthfully across a life becomes, in time, the shape of the life itself.

To live truly is to see clearly. And to see clearly is to be exposed to what is seen - to admit it fully into the life one is living, and to consent to be changed by it.

The Forge is a philosophical novel in the guise of a mystery. It begins from this premise and follows it through the lives it touches: the worker whose figures are quietly altered while his name still signs them; the household whose stability rests on records no one will read; the child whose schooling depends on whether someone, somewhere, refused to look away.

During the height of the Gold Rush, in 1852, William Flynn is twelve years old when his grandfather presses a folded cloth into his hand at the door of a Cornish forge and sends him out into the world. The cloth is the record of a fraud his father has refused to certify, at the cost of three years of exile. The carrying of it will take William across an ocean and a continent and home again - and into the slow work of seeing what such a record costs the people whose lives it has touched.

Between Cornwall and the Sierras the novel ranges across a working century: a brig running west on the Atlantic, a Mississippi paddleboat, a small overland party threading the long valleys toward Santa Fe, a mining camp in the gold country at Angel's Camp, and the granite forge to which all of it returns. William travels with strangers who become teachers without intending to: a Lakota man who watches the river without deciding what he sees; a government surveyor and his daughter; a woman in a steamboat galley; a father long absent at an assay bench in California; a widow at a kitchen table on very little money. None of them sets out to teach him anything. The teaching is in the work each of them is already doing.

The Forge argues that honest work, correctly done and patiently sustained across a life, is the primary form of ethical action available to ordinary people. Such work has a dignity that does not depend on its being witnessed, rewarded, or even completed within the worker's lifetime. What it produces is the refusal to let a true thing be quietly described as a false one - and the long, daily discipline of seeing clearly and acting from what one has seen.
