Jack Moran has been many things in his young life: a son, a brother, a soldier, a friend, and an unfortunate link towards all legitimate and illegitimate world of the North of England, including the region's Kingpin of Crime, Harry Clacher. Following the death of his younger brother Liam - and consequently the slow demise of his whole family - Jack ends up in a violent bitter feud between himself and Harry's heir apparent (or who wants to be), Brody Clacher, a man desperate for respect and validation, where he unravels a conspiracy revealing a sea of corruption and death that plagues all, especially the innocents he thought as friends and allies.
Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Kate Bunker, Jack's aunt by choice from his mother May, returns home that she was forced to flee, and bringing with her a triage of regret and guilt for recent and long-dormant sins. In the front row of police collusion with Harry Clacher and other like-minded gangsters playing in games of politics and economics to protect their own interests, whatever it takes, Kate must rely on old allies that test her faltering morality, and forge new friends in the lowest and highest of places in order to survive what the North brings its way.
When the pair reluctantly connect in their stories, they will learn who their enemies are, the worst mistakes of those they love, and along the way, must contend with a county on the cusp of breakage, and a host of crooks and citizens seeking a slim chance at survival, at power, and at redemption ... or vengeance!
