Then the system appears to recover. Stores reopen. Freight rolls under armed escort. A guarded distribution program offers medicine for Laura and protection for the family's supplies. Against the warnings of those closest to him, Daniel wagers nearly everything on the promise that institutions still mean what their documents say.
