Two mothers. Two fires a century apart. One shared dream of repair.

Hannah is a millennial mom and late-night TV writer drowning in a deluge of phone notifications. Exhausted by motherhood in the face of artificial intelligence, climate change, and war, Hannah is ready to break. When a bitter argument over the war in Gaza estranges her from her father, Adam, her world ruptures. But after an LA wildfire burns Hannah's house down, Adam provides a peace offering: his mother's journals, in the Yiddish language Hannah never learned.

Enter Porja. A Yiddishist writer and Jewish Labor Bundist in 1930s Poland. Porja feels stifled as a seamstress and wife in an interpolitical marriage. She daydreams of a career as a radical writer fighting for creative liberation, a free Palestine, and Jewish safety everywhere. But when Porja loses her home and children to Nazi fire, her dreams are demolished. Porja immigrates to the Bronx, watching the post-war baby she didn't want assimilate into a world she cannot comprehend.

With Porja's journals translated, Hannah uncovers her father's deeply buried trauma, and her grandmother's parallel struggles of mothering in an unstable world. Armed with Ancestral Intelligence, Hannah must decide what repair looks like.

The Embers is a powerful, dual-timeline family saga about mothers navigating the liminal space between domestic life and revolution. It is an exploration of memory and the patterns of time, a celebration of Yiddishism, and a fearless examination of social fracture and intergenerational resilience.
