This is more than just a story of a spotted dog performing in opera.
Zhang Jinshan, a Peking Opera martial male role (wusheng) actor, is the leader of the Jinyun Theater Troupe. He keeps a loyal spotted dog. The dog accompanies him to the theater every day and stays backstage while Zhang performs. By a stroke of inspiration, Zhang trains the dog to play the role of the Celestial Hound. From then on, the act of a "real dog delivering real bites" takes Shanghai by storm. During a performance in Suzhou, the dog's ear is shot by an officer with a gun, and he is separated from his master, Zhang Jinshan. The dog waits faithfully at the place where they parted-until, by chance, he manages to jump onto a train heading back to Shanghai. At last, the dog finds his way home.
