The Burning Well

The Burning Well tells the remarkable story of Henry Lindqvist, a Swedish immigrant who came to Minnesota in the late 1800s with his wife, Astrid, and five young children, seeking the American dream in the dense forests near Hinckley. Together with his Norwegian neighbor Peter Johansson, Henry works tirelessly to transform wilderness into farmland, building not just a homestead but a thriving community rooted in faith, mutual support, and shared dreams.

But on September 1, 1894, everything changes in a matter of hours. The Great Hinckley Fire-one of the most devastating wildfires in American history-tears through their world with unprecedented fury. In a desperate attempt to save his family, Henry makes impossible choices that will haunt him forever. When the flames finally pass, he emerges from his well as the sole survivor, having lost his beloved wife Astrid and all five children: Erik, Margareta, Nils, Gustaf, and little Ingrid.

Broken in body and spirit, Henry is transported to a hospital in Duluth where he begins the long journey of physical and emotional recovery. Under the caring hands of Lily Thompson, a compassionate German-American nurse whose own faith has been deepened by personal loss, Henry slowly learns that healing is possible.
