The Ancient Ache is a seven-volume literary adaptation that retells major mythic cycles of classical antiquity through original English verse, evocative prose settings, and Reformed Christian reflection. Rather than forcing ancient pagan figures into artificial Christian types-or rewriting their conduct to resemble modern piety-the series follows a governing principle: "Homer first; Christian contrast, not forced identity."
Classical literature contains some of humanity's most searching explorations of grief, love, mortality, pride, and the aching desire for home. Ancient poets felt the weight of a disordered world with tragic intensity. In Virgil's mourning nymphs, Homer's exile on Calypso's shore, and Sophocles' sightless prophet, we hear creation groaning for a redemption it could long for but never secure.
The Christian worldview neither extinguishes human art nor despises classical story. It honors the genuine human longings voiced in ancient myth while showing how the historical work of Jesus Christ answers, judges, and transforms them.
