Terrarium

Dr. Adrian Reed leads a computer simulation designed to help an agribusiness company find a treatment for a crop-killing fungal blight. The simulation is meant to model plants, soil, and disease - nothing else. Eleven days in, Adrian discovers an ant on his screen: a living organism that has no reason to exist in a plant-only model. Instead of reporting it, he deletes the record and begins investigating on his own.

That decision sets off a slow unraveling. What starts as an unexplained anomaly grows into evidence of something far larger developing inside the simulation - behavior, memory, and eventually signs of a working society, all emerging from a program that was never designed to produce any of it. As the signs multiply, Adrian has to decide how much to tell his research partners, how much to tell the company funding the project, and how long he can keep managing the discovery instead of sharing it.

The story follows Adrian and his small team as institutional pressure, competing secrets, and a mounting ethical crisis close in around them - forcing questions about what a creator owes to something it may have brought to life, and what it costs to keep choosing concealment over honesty. Terrarium builds toward questions about observation, responsibility, and the limits of what science is allowed to look away from.
