The LEC series is best read in order as some stories extend over more than one volume, and the characters evolve.

story in the book and I think you just have to be careful.

Capitán Garcia Vilchez ot the Guardia Civil in Pueblo has given into temptation to gamble, because, let's face it, his luck is bound to change. No? And it does. He goes from having a reasonable income, his own home and his own wife, but the change of luck seems to include bankruptcy for himself and his long-suffering wife. Exit wife. Exit home. Even unto the mistress. Now he knows that luck has two directions - both up AND down.

Sargenta Carmen Ramírez Paragón is offered once again the command of the Guardia cuartel in Pueblo. Why? Who is tempted to do what? Carmen herself is tempted to find out why she is being offered what many would consider a desirable posting. And, surprise, surprise, she does eventually find out why when she stands accused of a serious crime.

Her lover, Gheorghe Petrescu, is suffering from confusion and guilt after providing evidence in Gibraltar against his former colleagues. No one loves a grass! Including him, it seems. Will he succumb to sympathetic Ileana's temptations? Is that why he ends up getting his testicles toasted? No, can't be. Or could it?

Pepe of the Pueblo Guardia is more than just tempted, he's doing his best to fine everyone in Pueblo into third world poverty. Many are tempted to do Pepe some harm and some actually do. But then his attention is gripped by an even bigger temptation. Those tempting drugs in the back shed of the cuartel calling, calling - Wealth is yours!

And where is Jesús the Healer in all this? Chelo needs his help as she's being harassed by lovelorn Toby. He helps, ends up unconscious in hospital and is obliged to bilocate to resolve matters. And more, much more.
