Tehran 1979 traces the extraordinary political and strategic journey that followed, from the fall of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi and the return of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to the creation of the Islamic Republic, the seizure of the American embassy, the Iran-Iraq War, and the consolidation of a new political order.

It then follows Iran through more than four decades of war, reconstruction, political reform, repression, protest, sanctions, nuclear confrontation and regional competition.

The book examines how revolutionary movements become states, how revolutionary institutions acquire lasting power, and how political rivals are gradually defeated, absorbed or removed. It explores the evolution of the Islamic Republic from its contested beginnings to the sophisticated security and political system that exists today.

Along the way, it examines the succession after Khomeini's death, the presidencies of Rafsanjani, Khatami and Ahmadinejad, the Green Movement, the nuclear file and the JCPOA, Iran's relationships across the Middle East, the protests of 2017, 2019 and 2022, and the continuing struggle between the Iranian state and a society that has repeatedly demanded change.

At the centre of the story is a question that reaches far beyond Iran:

What happens when a revolution succeeds?

The answer is neither simple nor inevitable. The Islamic Republic was not created fully formed in February 1979. It emerged through institutional competition, political struggle, war, coercion, compromise and adaptation. The state that exists today is the product of those successive battles.

Tehran 1979 is an evidence-led history of that transformation and its consequences. It separates established fact from contested interpretation, distinguishes evidence from inference, and follows the consequences of decisions across decades rather than treating the revolution as an isolated historical event.
