Stetson: American Icon celebrates the legendary hatmaker whose silhouette helped define the myth and reality of the American West. Through archival photographs, vintage advertisements, celebrity portraits, and contemporary commissions, the book follows the brand from John B. Stetson’s 1865 frontier origins to its place in modern music, film, and fashion. Essays by cultural historians and journalists consider how a practical piece of gear—sun shield, rain guard, portable shade—became a symbol of grit, independence, and style. Along the way, we see how Stetson bridged communities: cowboys and ranchers, jazzmen and country singers, Hollywood stars, artists, and presidents. Detailed spreads highlight craftsmanship—felt making, blocking, brim shaping, and finishing—revealing the quiet precision behind an object often read at a glance. The narrative also tracks the hat’s migrations beyond the West: European runways, New York streets, and festival crowds. Designed with robust image sequences and lively text, the volume functions as both cultural history and brand biography. For design lovers, it offers a study in durable iconography for fans of Americana, it’s a handsome testament to how objects gather stories—and how a hat, worn and reworn, can become shorthand for a nation’s imagination.
