Death seems to follow Veirella wherever she goes.

After a traumatic event ignited her uncontrollable magic, causing her to cocoon herself, Veirella struggles to return to her normal life, having lost over five years of it; one moment she was a ten-year-old girl, and the next she was fifteen. A year has passed since she came home, and she finds getting back to her normal life before the cocoon will not be easy.

She has powers she is terrified of and cannot control; a family she has no relation to; and a constant image of her dead friend in her head. After a year of no change in her behavior, her father decides to send her away to a school for kids like her, Celestial Born.

She had no interest in learning magic, but considering what happened before, she did not have a choice. Her fear of her magic becomes the least of her problems when kids like her begin dying-killed by their own magic no less-are they getting sick or is someone killing them?
