Squirrel monkeys belong to the genus Saimiri, a group of small to medium-sized primates within the family Cebidae, which also includes capuchins. They are native to Central and South America, with a natural range spanning Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, and the Guianas. Within this genus, several species and subspecies exist, the most recognized being the common squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), the black-capped squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis), and the Central American squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii).
Their habitats include tropical rainforests, riverine forests, mangroves, and lowland forests, where they are primarily found in the middle and upper canopy layers. They are highly arboreal and diurnal, meaning they spend most of their lives in trees and are active during daylight hours. Squirrel monkeys are exceptionally agile and fast, moving through branches with remarkable precision. This skill helps them forage efficiently for fruits, flowers, insects, and small vertebrates, as well as escape from predators such as snakes, birds of prey, and wild cats.
