"Dr. Castelan," Elias said, with the clean professional register of an attending addressing a new rotation's resident. Neutral. Correctly warm. Nothing in it that required explanation.

Reef looked up. His face did the thing - a brief, arrested quality, something very quickly replaced by the professional expression he'd apparently gotten quite good at.

Which was interesting. Because at twenty-two, he had not been good at it at all.

Elias Vane is the most competent surgeon in any room he enters - and the most carefully invisible. For eleven years, he has organized his life with the precision of a man who learned early what institutions do to people like him: they move on, and you rebuild, and you do not make the same mistake twice.
