SOFTSHELL TURTLE MASTERY

Softshell turtles belong to the family Trionychidae, a distinctive group of freshwater turtles recognized for their flattened, leathery shells. Fossil records suggest they have existed for more than 100 million years, originating during the Cretaceous period, which makes them one of the oldest surviving turtle lineages. Their evolutionary history demonstrates a gradual adaptation to aquatic environments, with morphological traits that have changed little over millions of years, indicating their high degree of specialization and environmental fitness.
Naturally, softshell turtles are distributed widely across North America, Africa, and Asia, with some species extending into parts of the Middle East and Southeast Asia. They thrive in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, ponds, floodplains, and slow-moving streams. Their preference for sandy or muddy bottoms allows them to bury themselves for camouflage, ambush feeding, and protection from predators. North American softshell species, such as the spiny softshell (Apalone spinifera) and smooth softshell (Apalone mutica), inhabit large stretches of rivers and lakes, while Asian species such as the Chinese softshell (Pelodiscus sinensis) are found in lowland rivers, agricultural canals, and reservoirs. In Africa, species like the Nile softshell (Trionyx triunguis) inhabit the Nile River and its tributaries, as well as coastal estuaries.
