The story is set in London, Xi'an, and the author's hometown of Maldon. The main character, Charlotte Swift, is taking a grading exam for her red-black karate belt. During the exam, Charlotte will do a number of moves, spar with her partner, and perform various kicks. The last section of the test is to break boards, also known as destruction. Charlotte is not worried about the destruction, but rather the feeling of accomplishment and power that she will feel after slamming the board. The book is available in multiple parts. For example:
