SIZE MATTERS

You have lost a fight to a housefly. Everyone has. It was not close.
Measured in its own body lengths, a fly moves faster than any aircraft humanity has ever built, rolls faster than a fighter jet, and reacts ten times more quickly than the hand coming toward it. None of this is because the fly is clever. It has a brain smaller than a grain of rice and no plans for the weekend. It wins because it is small, and small is not a scaled-down copy of our world. It is a different world, with a different set of forces in charge.
This is a tour of that discovery and of everything it quietly demolishes. Change how big a thing is and you do not get the same thing at a new magnification. You get new rules about what can fly, what can fall without consequence, what can stand upright, what can be cooled, what can be commanded, and what can be thought. The journey runs downward first, into a realm where gravity has been all but repealed and air behaves like syrup, then upward into the country of giants, where blood cannot climb to the head and a reflex takes several seconds to arrive. On the way it explains why our machines fail in precisely the places the arithmetic predicts, why cities behave like the opposite of animals, why armies and companies snap at foreseeable sizes, and why a larger brain is not automatically a finer one.
No equations. Not one. Only the single variable nobody thinks to check, and the long, cheerful list of confident statements it turns into nonsense along the way. Some of them will be yours.
