In The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle returns to Baker Street with a second collection of short stories devoted to the great detective and Dr John Watson. The cases range from domestic mysteries and ancient family secrets to political danger, betrayal, murder and revenge.

Here Holmes investigates the disappearance of Silver Blaze, uncovers the meaning of the Musgrave Ritual, enters the world of his brother Mycroft, and follows a trail of crime that reaches beyond London into the darker corners of Europe. The volume ends with "The Final Problem", the story in which Holmes meets his greatest adversary: Professor Moriarty.

These stories broaden the Sherlock Holmes canon in decisive ways. They look backward to Holmes's first investigation, reveal more of his private life and intellectual circle, and carry the detective myth toward one of the most famous cliff-edge endings in literary history.

First published in book form in 1893, with an 1894 date on the title page, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes was the second collection of Holmes short stories after The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It is presented here as Volume 4 of The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection, arranged according to the order of original publication.
