Vancouver, 2010. As the city polishes itself for the world's cameras ahead of the Winter Olympics, a few blocks east, the Downtown Eastside carries on largely unseen - a neighbourhood caught in a cycle few outside it ever have to understand: homelessness that drives people toward addiction, and addiction that makes finding a way home harder still.

Daniel and Sofia are two people trying to survive each other's addiction and their own, drawn together by a fragile romance that neither of them quite believes they deserve, while the street beneath them offers no real place to stand still. Elena, a social worker stretched thin by an overwhelmed system, fights daily battles for shelter beds and housing funding, refusing to let the people in her care become statistics. And Raj, a quietly determined volunteer, begins pulling at a thread of corruption that runs further than anyone expects - straight into the machinery of a man who treats human lives, and the roofs over their heads, as inventory.

As their paths converge, Shadows Beneath the Skyline asks what it actually takes to break a cycle that feeds on itself, and pays tribute to the people who show up, again and again, to help others find their way back - to sobriety, and to a place to call home.

A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to organizations supporting people experiencing homelessness and addiction.
