Selected Essays of William Hazlitt

"Selected Essays of William Hazlitt 1778 to 1830" presents a comprehensive collection of the works of one of the most brilliant and influential prose stylists of the Romantic era. Known for his sharp wit, profound insight, and passionate engagement with both literature and society, William Hazlitt's essays remain a cornerstone of English letters. This collection showcases the breadth of his intellectual pursuits, ranging from astute literary criticism and character studies to philosophical meditations and observations on contemporary culture.

Hazlitt's writing is characterized by its gusto-a term he himself popularized to describe the intensity and vitality of artistic expression. Within these pages, readers will encounter his thoughts on the poets and playwrights of his time, his reflections on human nature, and his incisive political and social critiques. His ability to blend personal experience with universal themes makes these essays as relevant today as they were in the early nineteenth century.

This volume serves as an essential introduction to Hazlitt's mastery of the essay form, offering a window into the vibrant intellectual landscape of the Regency period. Whether analyzing the works of Shakespeare or contemplating the simple pleasures of a long walk, Hazlitt's voice is consistently compelling, making this collection a must-read for students of literature and admirers of classic prose.
