This book argues that the lack of adequate institutional theories of contemporary capitalism is due to the increasing separation of the sub-disciplines of Comparative and International Political Economy. Theorizing about economic institutions usually only takes place in one of the two over-specialized sub-disciplines of Political Economy, thereby leading to a neglect of the interplay between national and international economic institutions. This is particularly problematic in the case of emerging markets, given that capitalism in the latter has developed in a different stage of development of capitalism, with a much powerful moulding through international economic institutions. The author seeks to rectify this gap.
