Scientific Examination of Pictures

"Scientific Examination of Pictures" is a pioneering study focused on the application of scientific methods to the analysis and authentication of paintings. This work serves as a foundational text in the field of art conservation and technical art history, exploring various analytical techniques such as chemical tests for pigments and the use of X-rays to uncover the physical history of classical masterpieces.

The author provides detailed methodologies for identifying the specific materials used by historical artists, offering invaluable insights into the composition of paints and the physical structure of canvases and panels. By bridging the gap between art and science, this volume demonstrates how laboratory examination can confirm provenance, detect forgeries, and guide complex restoration efforts. It remains an essential reference for conservators, art historians, and scientists interested in the intersection of chemistry and the visual arts.

Through its systematic approach, the work illuminates the technical evolution of painting techniques across centuries. It emphasizes the importance of objective evidence in the study of fine art, making it a significant contribution to the development of modern museum science and the preservation of cultural heritage.
