Eleanor "Ellie" Collins, an American intelligence officer in the CIA, trained in code-breaking, surveillance, and psychological warfare. She is assigned a high-stakes mission to infiltrate Soviet-backed intelligence circles in Europe while also navigating the rising threat of fascist regimes in the Middle East, Europe, South America and Africa.

Eleanor's work is complicated when she uncovers a plot by the CIA to plant false intelligence that would push the Soviet Union to escalate tensions in the Cold War. As a loyal officer, she is torn between following orders or acting on her own moral convictions. As a woman in a system that doesn't fully value her, Ellie constantly struggles to navigate a world that values power and control more than moral integrity. She develops a deep connection with a group of underground artists in Paris who are fighting against both American and Soviet interference.

As she becomes more involved in their world, she starts to question the global chessboard she's playing on. The more she works undercover, the more isolated she feels from her own ideals. She has to make choices that affect her love life, her friendships, and her loyalty to her country. As the Cold War progresses, Ellie realizes that no one can be trusted.
